TUESDAY EVENING

Annie felt like she was drowning. The beech leaves of the hedge shuddered in the rain around her, and the road was slick with water that bubbled into the drains. She knew she shouldn’t have got involved, but she had called the missing person’s number because she wanted to help. It was Sam who’d encouraged her. Sam and Paul and Lauren had all said it was the right thing to do, even though her own instincts tugged her back the other way. But the opinions of the others had overwhelmed her, like the tide against Canute.

She thought of her mother. Her mother would pull her back, but Annie didn’t want to ask her. She would have to tell her everything, and her mother would be so disappointed. ‘No more lies between us, Annie.’ She’d told her that a long time ago. ‘We won’t survive if we’re not at least truthful with each other.’

Drops of rain rolled off her coat onto her legs, and she clutched her bag to her front, trying to protect it. It was stupid to think she might have impressed Sam, never mind actually been useful. The wind whistled through the dry leaves, Sam, Sam, Sam, mocking her, and she broke into a run. Her steps created waves that broke around her feet.

She’d been in the car park when Chloe was there, the CCTV of her car proved it, and Annie hadn’t even seen her. She would have pulled Chloe out of danger, she told herself. She would never have left her there if she’d known. Never. She felt hot tracks mingle with the cold rain on her cheeks and swiped at her eyes in surprise. It was no use being sorry; she had to stop it happening. She stood before her own front door, and, for a moment, she didn’t know where she was.
